SIUT started as an eight-bedded ward in Civil Hospital, Karachi. In the years following its inception, it has progressed from a small ward to a Centre of Excellence. In 1991 it was granted the status of an Institute by an Act of the Provincial Assembly and is one of the leading nephro-urlogical and transplant centres, offering patient services of this kind in the region. At present, SIUT is located within Civil Hospital, Karachi. SIUT’s new premises, the Dewan Farooq Medical Complex, are situated one block away and house many of its diagnostic facilities. This 300-bed Complex has been built on a plot of 1.5 acres granted by the Sindh Government. As such, it is one of the largest centres for renal diseases and transplantation in the region, covering an area of 315, 000 sq. feet. The construction of the Complex was made possible by a generous donation from the Dewan Mushtaq family, a local philanthropic business concern.
